Interview questions skilled migrants hear in Germany
Motivation, start date, and recognition status appear again and again. Prepare answers that stay factual without apologising for your path.
German interview panels often mix technical questions with practical ones about relocation, notice periods, and language. Skilled migrants should expect to explain why this employer and region, not only why Germany in general.
Questions about gaps are common. Answer with the activity that filled the time — language courses, recognition paperwork, caregiving, or contract endings — and move quickly to what you can deliver now. Long justifications invite more probing.
When asked about salary, research local ranges for the role level and region before the interview. If you are early in the process, it is acceptable to ask for the employer’s band and then position yourself with evidence rather than a single improvised number.
Prepare two or three concrete examples that show teamwork under German-style constraints: documentation, hierarchy, or customer-facing standards. Panels respond better to specific incidents than to adjective-heavy self-descriptions.
End by asking questions that show you have read the vacancy: team size, probation expectations, or how onboarding handles language support. Curiosity about the work reads stronger than questions only about remote days or perks.
