Which documents belong in a German job application bundle?
CV and letter are only the start. Certificate order and naming can decide whether HR opens the file at all.
A typical German application PDF begins with the cover letter, followed by the Lebenslauf, then education and employment certificates in reverse chronological order. Language certificates and recognition notices often sit near the end unless the vacancy makes them the primary filter.
File naming matters more than applicants expect. Use clear labels such as Nachname_Lebenslauf.pdf rather than scan001.pdf. When combining documents, keep page orientation consistent and avoid low-contrast phone photos of certificates.
Not every certificate needs to travel with every application. Prioritise the highest qualification, the most recent employers, and any German-language proof the vacancy names. Extra pages can bury the evidence HR cares about.
If documents are in another language, note whether a translation is required for that employer or profession. Sworn translations are sometimes mandatory for recognition processes and optional for private-sector roles — check before spending on a full set.
During coaching we often build a master folder and a slimmed application set for each vacancy type. That habit saves time when deadlines are short and keeps sensitive documents from being overshared.
